Just as Capcom’s remake of “Resident Evil 2” had the highest overall score of any 2019 game release on Metacritic, it looks like the upcoming “Resident Evil 4” could do the same this year.
Praise for this new version of the gaming franchise’s most acclaimed entry is almost universal with the title pulling in a 93/100 on PC and PS5 and a 91/100 on Xbox – easily placing it in Game of the Year competition territory.
Those are also the best numbers for the franchise in recent years. 2019’s RE2 remake came in a slightly lower 93/91/89, 2020’s RE3 remake is at a decidedly lower 84/79/77, and 2021’s straight-to-new game “Resident Evil Village” is at 84/83/83.
It follows some very strong ground-up remakes of late like “Dead Space” (89/89/87) and “The Last of Us Part I” (88) along with “Metroid Prime” and “The Witcher 3”- remasters both sit at 94/100 each.
While the latter two are more straightforward remasters, this is a full-fledged remake in a new engine and is therefore the highest scoring ‘new’ game of 2023, trailing only the aforementioned “Dead Space” remake, “Hi-Fi Rush” ( 89) and “Hogwarts Legacy” (88).
The “Resident Evil 4” remake has also scored perfect 10/10s from nearly three dozen outlets, including The Guardian, The Washington Post, Digital Spy, VG247, IGN, TheGamer, Push Square, Game Spot, GamesHub, VGC and more .
With the game’s release imminent, the obvious question becomes where will Capcom go next. The less well-regarded co-op-centric “Resident Evil 5” with its deeply questionable politics followed by the much-hated “Resident Evil 6”? Are they going back to the beginning with another remake of the very first game? Will they try to bring the Dreamcast’s “Resident Evil: Code Veronica” into the present?
Much will depend on sales of the fourth game’s remake, which hits stores next Friday.
