Members of a popular internet forum were stunned after one teenager revealed why she was accused of destroying her brother’s marriage and family.
In a viral Reddit post published on r / AmITheA ** hole, Redditor u / throwawaypoolproblem (otherwise referred to as the original poster, or OP) said she was left in an anesthesia-induced, poolside daze by her 24-year-old sister -in-law before learning she was supposed to blame the couple’s divorce.
Titled, “[Am I the a**hole] for ruining my brother’s marriage because his wife left me at the pool? “the post has received more than 10,000 votes and 5,000 comments in the last four hours.
Explaining that her sister-in-law had agreed to drive her to, and from, her wisdom tooth removal surgery, the original poster said that everything was going to plan — until it wasn’t.
“When I came out of anesthesia I was very disoriented and nauseous,” OP wrote. “I had gauze shoved in my mouth to stop any bleeding and [she] took me to her car after I was let go.
“I don’t really remember much of the drive but it felt like not enough time passed before [she] got out of the car and told me to come with her, “OP continued.” Long story short, we were at a pool. “
Still delirious and disoriented, the original poster said her sister-in-law led her to a poolside table and told her she’d be back in a while.
As OP held back vomit and struggled to remain conscious in 90 degree heat, she said she called her brother to explain what was happening, inadvertently sparking a chain of contentious, life altering events.
“I guess since it was her day off and she didn’t have my niece she was meeting friends at the pool,” OP wrote. “I was starting to feel really sick and on the verge of passing out or having a panic attack, so I called my brother.”
“He couldn’t understand me … and I guess called [her] because she came stomping back over, cussing and yelling, “OP continued.” My brother had left work and met us in [their] driveway. He was screaming and [she] was crying. “
“My brother took me back home and stayed with me until the meds wore off [and] that’s when he told me he’s divorcing [her] because of what she did, “OP added.” It’s been a few days and …[she] has been blowing up my phone telling me what ab ** ch I am and how me tattling destroyed her family. “
Although all wisdom tooth extraction surgeries accomplish basically the same result, not all extractions require the same amount of patient care afterwards.
For every wisdom tooth extraction, the Mayo Clinic reports that dental professionals select from a trio of anesthetics: local anesthesia, sedation anesthesia and general anesthesia.
Local anesthesia, administered via injections near extraction sites, keeps patients awake for the duration of the procedure and is minimally invasive. So much so that, depending on a series of tests, a patient may drive themselves home after their teeth are extracted, according to Dental Restorative Group.
But when heavier anesthetics are administered, the amount of necessary care following a wisdom extraction increases substantially.
Because of numerous side effects, including limited range of motion, decreased reflexes and impaired vision, Dental Restorative Group asserts that patients recovering from general anesthesia must be transported by a reliable adult and watched closely for one to two days following the procedure — not left nauseous by a pool with a mouthful of gauze and a panic attack on the horizon.
Throughout the comment section of the viral Reddit post, many Redditors called out the original poster’s sister-in-law for deserting her and insisted that she deserved much better care.
However, even more Redditors remained focused on disproving the notion that somehow, the original poster was responsible for her brother’s now broken marriage.
“OP, you are not the reason they’re getting a divorce,” Redditor u / JeepersCreepers74 wrote in the post’s top comment, which has received nearly 17,000 votes. “But if you find out the reason, please come back and update.”
“[Not the a**hole]”they added.
Redditor u / kittenoftheeast, whose comment has received more than 5,500 comments, echoed that sentiment.
“[Not the a**hole]. Not remotely, “they wrote.” You did not ruin their marriage. The other things your brother didn’t detail? Sounds like [her] treatment of you was a last straw. “
“What she did was very irresponsible and childish,” Redditor u / CrossFace13 added, receiving nearly 3,000 votes. “I also don’t think that’s the sole reason why your brother is thinking of divorce, it sounds like the final nail in the coffin.”
“You did not ruin your brother’s marriage,” Redditor u / GoingPriceForHome chimed in. “SHE did. These sounds like the latest stunt she’s pulled in a long line of thoughtless and harmful behaviors.”
