Burnley are in advanced talks to sign Daniel Ballard from Arsenal on a permanent deal.
Ballard’s impressive performances in loan spells with Blackpool and Millwall, and for the Northern Ireland national team, meant there was interest from a number of clubs.
The Athletic understands new manager Vincent Kompany has played a critical role in persuading the 22-year-old to choose Burnley.
The deal is now in its final stages with Ballard scheduled to undergo a medical.
Arsenal intend to insert a clause into the deal which would grant them the opportunity to match future bids from prospective buyers.
Ballard is yet to make a competitive appearance for Arsenal but he has had regular game time during his last two loan spells.
The Northern Ireland international, who has been capped 15 times by his country, made 30 appearances for Blackpool – then in League One – during the 2020-21 campaign.
He followed that up by making 33 appearances for Championship side Millwall last season.
Kompany is in need of new recruits after losing 14 players this summer.
Center-backs Ben Mee and James Tarkowski are among those who have departed.
