President Obama Watches The Boys

Former US President Barack Obama previously listed Prime Videos The Boys as one of his favorite shows. The thought of one of the nation’s leaders watching the gritty series continues to be something showrunner Eric Kripke and the crew thinks about as they make the series.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, Kripke was asked about whether or not he can believe Obama watches The Boys† “I have no reason not to believe it,” Kripke said. “I mean, he didn’t have to put us on his list! It’d be weird if this was the show he chose to front about, because it’s kind of a show that is delivered to you in a brown paper bag [laughs]† You have to be a little brave to say that you watch this show, so I can’t imagine him lying about it.”

The showrunner went on to explain, “More than once in editing and post-production on the exploding penis sequence [this season], the thought has come up many times. Like, ‘Can you imagine President Obama watching this scene right now? And what must he be thinking?’ I really hope we make his list again. But I also understand why we might make a “Dear God, I’ve made a terrible mistake” list. I feel like it could go either way.”

It was in 2020 that Obama listed The Boys — along with watchmenThe Good Place and Better Call Saul — among his favorite shows to watch during the intense period brought on by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Specifically, he praised The Boys and watchmen for “how they turn superhero conventions on their heads to lay bare issues of race, capitalism, and the distorting effects of corporate power and mass media.”

Since then, Prime Video’s superhero satire franchise has released another season and spawned a spinoff project, the animated anthology series The Boys Presents: Diabolical!with at least one more, The Boys Presents: Varsity, currently in production. Both the released spinoff and the ongoing third season have offered audiences larger, more violent moments, including the “exploding penis” scene Kripke mentioned.

The showrunner previously explained the gruesome moment was inspired by a popular theory and meme involving Avengers: Endgame characters Ant-Man and central antagonist Thanos. He said, “That sequence started with, ‘We need The Boys to fight a superhero.’ So then we ask, ‘What big superhero haven’t we done yet?’ Someone says, ‘We haven’t done Ant-Man.’ And then someone else says, ‘There’s that meme of Ant-Man climbing up Thanos’ butt and blowing him up. So we should do that. We should give the audience the thing that Marvel can’t give to them.'”

New episodes of The Boys Season 3 drops every Friday on Prime Video.
