Shazam! Fury Of The Gods Strikes At The Worldwide Box Office – Deadline

Update to the latest…: New Line/DC/Warner Bros Shazam! Wrath of the Gods has been a less than heroic launch 65.5 million dollars worldwide, incl 35 million dollars from the international box office. We always knew this sequel would be cheaper than its predecessor, but the result is also far from where predictions were before the weekend.

All in all, the main question Shazam 2 there seems to be a disconnect with hardcore DC fans, and when it comes to China, the public’s attitude towards Hollywood is getting colder. Wrath of the Gods was simply a no-show in China with a measly $4.4 million weekend. Despite the fact that it was released there, the moviegoers did not turn up Shazam 2 (In the heady days of 2019, the first film bowed close to $30 million). This is part of a worrying trend in the world’s second-largest box office market, where (outside character) people have avoided Hollywood fare. Interesting, Shazam 2 has an audience score of 8.8 Maoyan, while the first film ended with 7.9. In Douban, it scored higher in frames than the original, but now the critics are tied at 6.2.

Families arrived more often in some markets over the weekend, but it wasn’t enough to jump. Mexico gave Shazam 2 No. 1 starts at $4 million (-32% from the first film). The Great Britain debuted to $3 million at No. 1, down 39% from its previous entry; Indonesia ($1.6 million), Brazil ($1.6 million) and Australia ($1.6 million) follow.

As Anthony has noted for the light domestic debut, you can’t blame Warner distribution for doing their job: They protected Shazam 2get it off Avatar: The Way of Water so that it could use premium screens. The IMAX release grossed $5.1 million worldwide, including $2.5 million from overseas.
